Auschwitz-Birkenau
Leave Krakow for a thought-provoking day to explore the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp complex. This solemn destination undoubtedly leaves a profound impact on every visitor, serving as a significant memorial to the victims of extermination.
Established and funded by the Nazi party in 1940, Auschwitz-Birkenau stands as a stark symbol of human suffering and bears witness to the physical and emotional anguish endured. As the largest concentration camp operated by the Nazis, it became the final resting place for millions of individuals, predominantly Jews, who tragically met their demise in the abhorrent gas chambers.
Begin your visit by traveling to the museum and memorial located in the outskirts of Oświęcim, roughly 60 kilometers west of Krakow. Upon arrival, after approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, you will be greeted by a knowledgeable guide who will lead you through the site, recounting its dark history.
Pass through the gate marked with the inscription “Arbeit macht frei” to enter Auschwitz I, where your guide will accompany you through the preserved area, providing insights into its historical significance. Following that, proceed to the second camp, Birkenau, where mass killings were carried out as part of the Nazi’s “Final Solution to the Jewish Question.” Spend approximately 1 hour at the Birkenau camp, absorbing the solemn atmosphere, before reuniting with your driver for the return journey to Krakow.
